Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday repudiated threats of severe economic punishment leveled by U.S. President Donald Trump, characterizing the approach as a discredited strategy that would only fuel deeper antagonism among the Iranian population. Araghchi stated that such measures would ultimately prove counterproductive, adding that the administration’s focus on economic coercion reflected an effort to divert domestic attention from American financial challenges.
Trump had announced plans for “crushing economic measures” and an unprecedented campaign of “Economic Warfare and Isolation” against Iran, though he offered minimal elaboration on specific actions. In his response, Araghchi accused the United States of practicing “economic terrorism” that threatens both global financial stability and the sovereignty of nations worldwide.
Syria’s Foreign Minister Assad al-Shibani arrived in Islamabad on Thursday for discussions centered on regional stability, according to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The diplomatic visit follows recent Israeli airstrikes on a Syrian air base in the country’s north, which inflicted structural damage without causing casualties.
Pakistan’s political and military leadership continues active engagement with both Iran and the United States in efforts to reduce regional tensions and restart negotiations, Pakistani officials said. A 60-day deadline under a June memorandum of understanding brokered by Pakistan expired recently, spurring renewed diplomatic activity.
Pakistan repatriated the remains of two crew members killed during a Houthi attack on a Tanzanian-flagged vessel in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait last week. Six other Pakistani sailors injured in the same incident returned safely to the country, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced, adding that Pakistan “condemns the attack in the strongest terms” and emphasized that seafarer safety must remain a priority.
