The National Hockey League confirmed Thursday that two of its marquee franchises will bring regular-season matchups to Germany during the 2027-28 campaign. The Boston Bruins will host two contests in Munich while the Edmonton Oilers stage two games in Cologne, the hometown of star player Leon Draisaitl, with opponents still to be named.
This expansion effort reflects a broader NHL strategy to deepen its footprint across European markets. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly characterized the initiative as a pivotal moment for hockey development in Germany, emphasizing that the league aims to strengthen relationships with fans, corporate partners, and regional communities while simultaneously building the sport’s infrastructure nationwide.
The announcement builds on previous international ventures. The Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators are already committed to playing two games in Düsseldorf in December, continuing a tradition that began in 2011 when the Buffalo Sabres and Los Angeles Kings competed in Berlin.
The NHL and players’ association have pledged to maintain regular-season play in Germany for at least three consecutive seasons, signaling a long-term commitment to establishing the country as a key market for professional hockey in Europe.
