O.J. Brigance, the former Baltimore Ravens linebacker who helped capture the franchise’s first Super Bowl victory, succumbed to complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis on Monday at age 56. Ravens ownership confirmed the death of the player who became an iconic figure in the organization’s early years.
Brigance’s professional football career spanned from 1996 to 2002, during which he played for four NFL teams including the Miami Dolphins, St. Louis Rams, and New England Patriots. His most significant contribution came during Baltimore’s 2000 campaign, when he appeared in 16 games and recorded the first tackle in Super Bowl XXXV, a dominant 34-7 victory over the New York Giants.
The Rice University product joined Miami as an undrafted free agent in 1996 and remained with the Dolphins through 1999 before signing with Baltimore. His one-year tenure with the Ravens in 2000 yielded 12 tackles and a forced fumble.
Brigance received his ALS diagnosis in 2007 and subsequently established a foundation dedicated to advancing research into the neurodegenerative disease. His advocacy earned him the 2016 NCAA Inspiration Award for his contributions to the fight against the illness.
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti released a statement describing Brigance as “a beloved legend, mentor and man” whose infectious personality and passionate competitive spirit made him one of the franchise’s foundational heroes. Former Ravens head coach Brian Billick and his wife Kim echoed the sentiments, calling Brigance a symbol of grace and compassion who exemplified organizational values throughout his more than 25 years with the team.
