The actress best known for playing Pam Beesly on NBC’s “The Office” has opened up about why she stepped away from television acting after nine seasons on the beloved sitcom concluded in 2013. Fischer explained that her experience as the lead on ABC’s “Splitting Up Together” in 2018 made clear that demanding on-set schedules were incompatible with raising her young children.
During an appearance on the “Dinner’s On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson” podcast, Fischer disclosed that the production required 65 to 70 hours weekly. “It was, like, really, really hard, and my kids were very small,” she recalled, noting that the grueling pace forced her to reassess her career trajectory.
The demanding role prompted Fischer to make a significant professional shift. “I just decided after that that being, like, the lead of a television show or even a regular on a television show was not going to be a fit for me anymore,” she stated, charting a new direction that would allow greater flexibility.
When “Splitting Up Together” was canceled, Fischer found an opportunity that aligned with her priorities. She partnered with former “The Office” co-star Angela Kinsey to launch “Office Ladies,” a podcast revisiting episodes of the NBC sitcom while sharing behind-the-scenes anecdotes and production insights.
Podcasting proved transformative for Fischer, granting her autonomy over her schedule that television work had denied. “I was now at every school drop-off, every school pickup, every teacher conference, every concert,” she explained. The medium also delivered steady income without requiring her to sacrifice family obligations.
Fischer’s prioritization of her children gained additional weight following a serious health diagnosis. She announced in October 2024 that she had been diagnosed with Stage 1 triple-positive breast cancer in December 2023, discovered through follow-up testing after an inconclusive mammogram.
The actress underwent a lumpectomy in January 2024, followed by chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Fischer confirmed that the cancer was detected early and had not spread to her lymph nodes or other sites in her body, and she announced she was cancer-free in 2024.
