Calais Campbell Returns to Ravens Despite Summer Family Tragedy

Calais Campbell has decided to continue his professional football career with the Baltimore Ravens despite enduring significant personal hardship over the past few months. The 39-year-old defensive lineman made his first public comments Tuesday since a family tragedy that claimed his mother’s life and resulted in his brother facing murder charges.

“I love the game of football a lot … it brings me joy,” Campbell said of his decision to play his 19th NFL season. The veteran, who signed a one-year contract with Baltimore in April, acknowledged that training has proven challenging but emphasized his deep affection for the sport and appreciation for his current team.

In late June, Campbell’s 71-year-old mother was discovered dead at her Atlanta residence during a police welfare check. His 41-year-old brother, Ciarre Campbell, was subsequently charged with murder after officers located him with a knife, according to arrest warrants. Police were informed that Ciarre struggles with serious mental health issues.

The Ravens granted Campbell flexibility during the opening stages of training camp, allowing him to miss initial full-team sessions. He rejoined the team for his first full practice on August 3, five days after the organization commenced full-team activities. Campbell expressed gratitude for the widespread support received from the NFL community while requesting continued prayers for his family during their difficult period.

Campbell, a six-time Pro Bowler who previously played for Baltimore from 2020 to 2022, boasts 117 career sacks across 278 NFL games. Head coach Jesse Minter praised Campbell’s versatility on the defensive line and noted his value as a leader and mentor within the organization, acknowledging the challenging circumstances surrounding his return.
