Amanda Anisimova drew considerable attention during her Round of 32 match against Alex Eala at the Cincinnati Open on Monday when broadcast footage captured her consuming a drink from a concealed plastic cup. The 24-year-old American pulled the beverage from beneath a towel on her bench during the second set, prompting immediate speculation from viewers and commentators alike about its contents.
Tennis Channel broadcasters Brett Haber and Lindsay Davenport expressed uncertainty about what Anisimova was drinking, with Haber noting the optics resembled something alcoholic. Davenport suggested it could be apple cider, while Haber cautiously acknowledged the beverage’s appearance without making definitive claims. The fact that Anisimova appeared to conceal the cup fueled assumptions among fans that she was consuming beer, which is prohibited during competition.
Haber later clarified on air that courtside camera operators confirmed Anisimova had requested and received a Red Bull energy drink. Despite the revelation, the moment generated substantial social media discussion, with tennis fans joking about the unconventional mid-match refueling choice.
Anisimova advanced to the Round of 16 after winning the third set decisively, 6-2. She is scheduled to face Linda Noskova on Wednesday as the tournament progresses.
