An 11-year-old boy who survived a near-fatal ocean incident off the Santa Cruz, California coast marked his birthday this week with a visit to the White House, where he met President Donald Trump alongside the teenage lifeguard credited with his rescue. Nathaniel Rai, unconscious and unresponsive when pulled from the water, came within seconds of a fatal outcome, according to his father Sumit, who witnessed video of the dramatic rescue.

Sixteen-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams entered the turbulent water to reach the drowning boy, assisted by fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen, who helped bring Rai to shore. Sumit Rai, who was in Dallas when the incident occurred, learned the severity of his son’s condition only after seeing footage of the rescue broadcast on news outlets that evening. The video subsequently circulated widely across social media platforms.

During their Monday visit to the Oval Office, Trump praised the lifeguards’ bravery and emphasized the often-overlooked contributions of rescue personnel. “They’re going to look up to Ryder. They’re going to look up to Nathaniel, the way Nathaniel handled it,” the president said, noting the importance of public recognition for lifeguard work and beach safety efforts.

Nathaniel recalled the terrifying moments when waves overwhelmed him and swept him seaward, describing how he lost consciousness as water repeatedly crashed over him. His father expressed profound gratitude toward Williams, crediting the lifeguard’s courage in entering dangerous waters with risking his own safety to save his son’s life and make the birthday celebration possible.

The highlight of the White House experience for Nathaniel was having staff sing “Happy Birthday” to him inside the residence. Sumit Rai characterized the entire occasion as “incredible,” calling it a privilege and honor that the president recognized Williams’ heroic actions with an official invitation to the executive offices.
