USS George Washington Commanding Officer Reports Strong Crew Morale as Carrier Strike Group Assumes Middle East Operations

The USS George Washington, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, has transitioned into operational control of U.S. Central Command after arriving in the Arabian Sea adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian waters. Captain Nicholas DeLeo, the vessel’s commanding officer, emphasized crew readiness during recent remarks to media outlets, noting that the 5,000 sailors aboard maintain strong commitment to their assigned duties across all shipboard functions.

The carrier replaced the USS Abraham Lincoln in the region following a scheduled port visit to Vietnam approximately three weeks prior. As the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 5, the George Washington operates alongside multiple support vessels, including the guided missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls and the guided missile destroyer USS Shoup, providing layered defensive and offensive capabilities throughout the operational area.

Rear Admiral Jeff Heames, commanding officer of Carrier Strike Group 5, characterized his forces as prepared and professionally equipped for extended deployment requirements. The carrier’s air wing comprises approximately nine operational squadrons equipped with F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighters, F-35C Lightning II stealth aircraft, EA-18G Growler electronic warfare platforms, and multiple helicopter variants for anti-submarine and search-and-rescue missions.

Lieutenant Steven Frazier of Strike Fighter Squadron 147 achieved a historic milestone this week, completing the 200,000th arrested landing on the vessel in an F-35C fighter jet. The ship’s flight operations continue around the clock, with the deck capable of recovering approximately 70 aircraft daily through its arresting cable system.

Supply operations maintain continuous flow to sustain operations in the region. The carrier received 2,000 pallets of provisions, including fresh provisions and ammunition, via helicopter transfer from support vessels during two separate resupply evolutions within a four-day period. The ship’s complement of 150 culinary specialists prepare approximately 15,000 meals daily to support crew nutrition across three standard meal services plus night rations.

The USS George Washington marked a significant organizational milestone this week, commemorating the 40th anniversary of its keel laying on August 25, 1986. The vessel continues operational flight activities and maintenance operations while supporting broader U.S. military deterrence objectives in the Middle East region.
