The Minnesota Timberwolves have signed power forward Jonathan Kuminga to a two-year contract worth $12.4 million, a person familiar with the agreement told the Associated Press on Wednesday. The deal includes a player option for the second year, allowing the 2021 seventh overall draft pick to test free agency in 12 months, according to ESPN.
Kuminga, 23, addresses a significant frontcourt shortage created when the Timberwolves shipped out Julius Randle and Naz Reid as part of their acquisition of point guard LaMelo Ball. The acquisition signals the franchise’s intention to build around Ball and star Anthony Edwards while adding complementary scoring at the forward position.
The Congo-born forward posted a career-high 16.1 points per game during the 2023-24 season with the Golden State Warriors before the team traded him to the Atlanta Hawks in February. Falling out of favor under Warriors coach Steve Kerr, Kuminga appeared in just seven of the team’s final 38 games, marking a sharp decline from his previous role.
Over 278 NBA games, Kuminga has averaged 12.5 points and 22.1 minutes while shooting 50.2% from the floor. The Timberwolves will now attempt to integrate Kuminga and fellow forward Jaden McDaniels into an offensive system centered on Ball’s playmaking and Edwards’ scoring prowess.
