The Kansas City Chiefs enter 2026 searching for redemption after enduring their most turbulent season in over a decade. Last year’s 6-11 record marked the franchise’s first playoff absence since 2014, raising urgent questions about whether the organization can recapture championship form or faces a prolonged decline.
Kansas City’s 2025 collapse was defined by close-game collapses and defensive inconsistency, compounded by the loss of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a season-ending ACL tear in Week 15. The team limped through the final stretch with a 1-9 record in one-score contests and dropped six consecutive games to finish the year, prompting sweeping offseason changes across both sides of the ball.
The Chiefs aggressively retooled their roster, signing running back Kenneth Walker III to a three-year contract and extending tight end Travis Kelce on a new three-year deal while locking Mahomes through 2033. Defensively, Kansas City added safety Alohi Gilman, defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga, cornerbacks Kader Kohou and Kaiir Elam, and defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah while retaining linebacker L’Jarius Sneed.
Those acquisitions came at a cost, as cornerback Trent McDuffie was traded to Los Angeles and safety Bryan Cook departed for Cincinnati. The defensive overhaul represents a strategic shift, with Steve Spagnuolo’s front seven anchored by Chris Jones expected to anchor the unit while newly acquired secondary depth addresses last season’s vulnerabilities.
Analysts project the Chiefs at 10.5 wins for the coming season, though Mahomes’ recovery trajectory and adjustment to a revamped roster introduce considerable uncertainty. The quarterback’s availability will ultimately determine whether Kansas City can return to contention or faces an extended rebuilding period amid AFC West competition from improved Chargers and Broncos teams.
