Memorials to country music icon Dolly Parton have blanketed Nashville as residents throughout the city express their grief over her passing. Tributes range from floral arrangements placed outside her residence to handwritten messages left at murals painted across Music City, with an unending stream of mourners stopping to pay their respects to the legendary performer.
Outside the Country Music Hall of Fame, fans have surrounded Parton’s star with flowers and heartfelt notes. A short distance away, the yet-unopened Songteller Hotel, her most recent venture, has also become a gathering place where admirers have constructed an informal memorial to celebrate her life and legacy.
Parton’s impact extended beyond Nashville proper, as evidenced by the immediate reopening of Dollywood in East Tennessee the day following her death. The theme park’s decision to continue operations reflected what officials said would have been Parton’s own wishes, with the entertainment proceeding as a tribute to her enduring spirit.
The Grand Ole Opry, where Parton made her professional debut at age 13 when the venue operated at the Ryman, honored her memory by continuing performances. One attendee recalled the profound experience of having sung backup vocals with Parton at both the 1989 Country Music Awards and the 1990 Dove Awards, calling it the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
Images of Parton’s iconic smile have been painted on buildings throughout Nashville and East Nashville, with additional murals serving as focal points where fans continue leaving flowers and written tributes. The country legend left behind one final gift to the world: a secret song recorded and locked away in Dollywood, scheduled for release in 2045.
