President Donald Trump used a White House gathering Monday to advance his administration’s education agenda, emphasizing the need to empower parents in selecting their children’s schools and removing ideological influence from classrooms. Alongside Education Secretary Linda McMahon, Trump spoke to an audience of students, parents and educators about expanding educational options while combating what he characterized as progressive policies in public schools.

The centerpiece of the administration’s proposal is the Education Freedom Tax Credit, set to launch in 2027, which would provide taxpayers with credits up to $1,700 for contributions to scholarship organizations. These organizations would distribute funds for education-related costs such as private school tuition, tutoring fees, supplies and classroom materials, with eligibility potentially extending to public school students as well. The White House estimates approximately 52 million students could qualify for the program.

Trump also touted modifications to 529 education savings accounts that would permit families to withdraw up to $20,000 annually for kindergarten through 12th grade expenses, doubling the previous withdrawal threshold. The president argued that despite substantial federal education spending, student achievement levels remain inadequate and families require expanded schooling alternatives to find institutions aligned with their values.

McMahon characterized the administration’s education strategy as a “hard reset” designed to restore foundational principles to American schooling. Several parents at the event, including Caleb Griffith from North Carolina, shared testimonials about how increased school choice options could benefit their families, particularly those with children requiring specialized services.
