Two of Florida’s elite high school football programs collided Friday when seventh-ranked West Boca Raton traveled to Bill Laurie Stadium to face fourth-ranked American Heritage, with both squads positioned among the nation’s top 40 teams. The clash pitted defending state champions against each other in a matchup loaded with playoff implications and bragging rights for the early portion of the season. West Boca Raton ultimately prevailed with a convincing 24-7 victory.
West Boca Raton’s offense seized momentum midway through the opening quarter when quarterback Trey Moran connected with receiver Laonte Davis on a 40-yard touchdown pass to establish an early 7-0 advantage. The productive partnership between Moran and Davis proved difficult for American Heritage’s defense to contain throughout the contest, as the Bulls methodically built their lead. West Boca Raton extended its advantage to 14-0 by intermission and maintained its dominance for the remainder of the game.
American Heritage struggled offensively for much of the first half, not recording its initial first down until the third quarter. The Patriots eventually reached the end zone to narrow the deficit, but the damage had been done. West Boca Raton’s defense proved too formidable, and the Bulls pulled away to secure the 24-7 final margin.
American Heritage coach Mike Smith acknowledged his team’s shortcomings while praising the opponent’s performance. “That’s a good team. Gotta give them a lot of credit, but we killed ourselves with a lot of the little things,” Smith said. He emphasized that regrouping and returning to fundamental work remained the priority moving forward for the Plantation-based program.
