The rescue operation marked only the first chapter for survivors who suffered amputation in the catastrophic event. Ricardo Contreras had to amputate one leg while clawing through rubble and sustained severe hand injuries during his escape. Karina Bechara remained pinned beneath heavy furniture for 23 consecutive hours, her legs crushed by the weight. Both individuals now confront an extended rehabilitation period that medical professionals estimate could span a full year.
At Ortoprotécnica, a specialized orthopedic facility and prosthetics workshop, requests for artificial limbs have skyrocketed dramatically since the disaster. Orthopedic specialist Bianca Dámaso has determined that approximately 200 people lost limbs in the event. She noted that survivors face compounding losses beyond physical injury, including destroyed homes, lost employment, family members killed, and permanent bodily damage.
Obtaining a prosthetic device represents just the opening phase of a lengthy process that may extend nearly 12 months before patients attempt their first fittings. Multiple charitable organizations and foundations have mobilized to offset the substantial financial burden of prosthetic limbs for affected individuals. Dámaso indicated that knowledge of future prosthetics provides psychological relief to patients grappling with their circumstances.
Contreras has experienced additional tragedy, having lost both parents in the same apartment where he was trapped. Despite his dual devastation, he maintains determination to move forward through daily affirmation and continued commitment to work and education. Dámaso herself reflected on resilience, stating that recognizing life’s opportunities following such trauma offers a pathway toward renewal.
