An attorney for Dr. Anthony Fauci has announced the creation of a legal defense fund to finance his representation as investigations from federal and state authorities continue to advance. The fund, titled the Anthony S. Fauci M.D. Legal Defense Fund, will cover legal fees and administrative expenses incurred through ongoing inquiries and proceedings, according to a statement posted on the fund’s website.

Republican lawmakers, including Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, have accused the former pandemic adviser of misleading Americans regarding COVID-19’s origins. Paul has urged the Department of Justice to prosecute Fauci, who invoked the Fifth Amendment repeatedly during a July Congressional hearing. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, under Paul’s direction, voted to hold Fauci in contempt following the hearing.

Fauci, 85, retired in 2022 after directing the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for nearly four decades. During the pandemic, he advocated for mask-wearing, social distancing, vaccinations and lockdowns. He served as a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force under President Donald Trump and advised seven presidents throughout his career.

David Schertler, Fauci’s attorney, said his client has committed no wrongdoing and vowed to contest what he characterized as baseless allegations. Remaining funds after legal proceedings conclude will be directed to charitable organizations, the legal team stated.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has subpoenaed Fauci to investigate whether he “personally profited” from pandemic guidance he issued. Louisiana and West Virginia have joined Florida’s inquiry. Former President Joe Biden issued Fauci a preemptive pardon before leaving office.

Prior to retirement, Fauci earned nearly $500,000 annually as the highest-paid federal employee. His federal pension now approximates a presidential salary, according to OpenTheBooks CEO Adam Andrzejewski. Fauci and his wife reported a combined net worth of $12.6 million in 2021.

David Morens, a former adviser to Fauci, pleaded guilty Tuesday to attempting to conceal pandemic-related documents by circumventing public records requirements.
