The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado struck the Sun and Surf Beach Club in Atlantic Beach on Long Island, destroying more than 30 cabanas at the oceanfront facility. The powerful storm caused significant structural damage to the resort’s recreational structures, affecting vacationers and staff at the popular destination.
Nassau County officials responded to the tornado by declaring a state of emergency in the affected area. The declaration enables rapid deployment of emergency services and resources to assess damage, coordinate recovery efforts, and support those impacted by the severe weather event.
Investigators surveyed the damage to determine the tornado’s strength and track. The confirmation of the twister adds to a notable history of severe weather events affecting New York’s coastal communities.
