Spanish IndyCar driver Alex Palou cherished his opportunity to tour the White House and Oval Office during a visit with President Donald Trump in July, an experience he called unforgettable. Palou was among several NTT INDYCAR SERIES competitors invited to meet with the president ahead of this weekend’s inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix, marking the first-ever auto race around Washington D.C.’s National Mall.
The 29-year-old described seeing the historic office in person as a surreal moment, particularly given his childhood fascination with American landmarks through films. Palou reflected on how the country has shaped his career and personal life, allowing him to achieve success as an IndyCar champion and start a family in the United States. He even recalled a lighter moment from the visit when he and other drivers were sprayed with the president’s cologne.
Palou’s dominance this season positions him to secure his fifth championship title and fourth consecutive crown within the month. With 542 points, he maintains a commanding 133-point lead over second-place Kyle Kirkwood’s 409 points through 14 starts, accumulating six victories and 12 top-10 finishes so far. Only Sebastien Bourdais has matched his achievement of four consecutive season championships, accomplished between 2004 and 2007.
The 1.7-mile circuit traversing Pennsylvania Avenue and prominent national landmarks will challenge drivers this weekend, and Palou expressed enthusiasm about competing alongside his fellow drivers in such a unique venue. He anticipated strategic complexity and numerous lead changes throughout the race, underscoring the distinctive nature of this historic motorsports event.
