Police in northern Germany documented a violent animal encounter Friday when a loose donkey assaulted motorists and a bystander near Cuxhaven. The donkey, identified as Freddy, jumped into a van after becoming enraged and attacked the vehicle’s occupants with kicks and bites. A third individual who attempted to contain the animal also sustained injuries during the confrontation.

The incident unfolded in the town of Holssel, south of the coastal city of Cuxhaven, where onlookers first spotted both the donkey and a horse running freely at a roundabout. When local motorists moved to restrain the donkey, the animal’s behavior escalated dramatically, prompting it to leap into their vehicle. The owner of the animals eventually arrived at the scene and secured Freddy, ending the attack.

A 33-year-old woman who intervened to help subdue the donkey required hospitalization for her injuries, according to the Cuxhaven police statement. The two motorists who were attacked sustained minor wounds from the encounter. Authorities acknowledged that the underlying cause of the donkey’s aggressive behavior remains undetermined.
