The Log Cabin Republicans, a major gay conservative organization, is narrowing its advocacy mission to exclude transgender issues. Ross Hemminger, the group’s president, announced the shift in an op-ed published Thursday on Townhall.com, stating the organization will now concentrate solely on representing gay, lesbian and bisexual Republican voters rather than the broader LGBTQ+ coalition.
Hemminger recalled the group’s founding principle from 50 years ago: securing equal protection and a voice in the Republican Party for gay Americans who value limited government and individual liberty. He explained that the board’s 2015 decision to expand the mission to include transgender advocacy is being reversed after what he characterized as the movement’s departure from its original focus on adults.
The LCR chief attributed declining public support for gay rights to what he called the “radical” direction of modern transgender activism. He cited the movement’s emphasis on gender ideology in schools, transgender participation in women’s sports, and gender reassignment treatments for minors as reasons voters have grown skeptical of the broader gay community’s agenda.
Hemminger emphasized that Log Cabin Republicans’ core principles—marriage equality, adoption rights, military service, nondiscrimination protections, and religious liberty—remain grounded in constitutional law and align with Republican values of limited government. He stated the organization welcomes all conservative allies while maintaining its refined LGB-focused mission moving forward.
