Klay Thompson, a decorated four-time NBA champion, is poised to join the Miami Heat after the Dallas Mavericks agreed to terminate his contract through a buyout, according to multiple reports released Friday. Thompson must pass through the waiver process before he can officially finalize an agreement with Miami.

The 36-year-old Thompson was scheduled to receive $17.5 million during the 2026-27 season. Dallas had pursued various trade scenarios involving the veteran sharpshooter but ultimately determined a buyout represented the optimal path forward for both parties.

Thompson departs Dallas after two seasons with the franchise, during which he appeared in 141 games with 80 starts and averaged 12.9 points per game while converting 38.7 percent of his three-point attempts. His arrival in Miami concludes a significant offseason for the Heat that has already included acquisitions of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis, and Tim Hardaway Jr., complementing center Bam Adebayo.

Thompson launched his NBA career in 2011 when the Golden State Warriors selected him 11th overall. He spent 13 seasons with Golden State, capturing four championships and earning five All-Star honors during his tenure with the organization.
