Taylor Sheridan had mapped out his exit from the entertainment industry before a $330 million ranch acquisition upended those plans. The 56-year-old writer and director revealed during an appearance on the “Rodeo Time” podcast that his purchase of the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas derailed his retirement strategy and ultimately led him to commit to an exclusivity agreement with Paramount.
Sheridan stated he was prepared to step away from Hollywood following the conclusion of “Yellowstone,” having already purchased a separate ranch in Weatherford and paid in full. His original intention was to focus on equestrian pursuits and operate a modest breeding operation. However, acquiring the Four Sixes Ranch meant extending his involvement in television production for years to come.
Before proceeding with the purchase, Sheridan prioritized securing continuity by ensuring the existing general manager would remain in his position and confirming his son’s willingness to assume future operational responsibilities. The Four Sixes had served as a filming location for “Yellowstone” Season 4 episodes, where Sheridan initially encountered its previous owner, Anne Marion.
Following Marion’s death, Sheridan learned the property faced potential subdivision and sale. Marion’s estate representatives requested that Sheridan consider acquiring the ranch to preserve her vision for the land. When presented with the $330 million asking price, Sheridan acknowledged his initial shortfall, lacking approximately $300 million of the necessary funds.
Paramount executives, who had pursued Sheridan for years seeking an overall production agreement, provided the financial mechanism to bridge that gap. Sheridan capitalized on their eagerness by negotiating his participation in an exclusive deal. The transaction closed January 21, 2022, with Sheridan leading an investor group in the purchase.
Since formalizing his Paramount arrangement, Sheridan has created “Mayor of Kingstown,” “1883,” “1923,” “Lioness,” “Landman,” “Tulsa King,” and “The Madison.” Actor Michael Kelly, who stars in “Lioness,” recently commended Sheridan’s creative capabilities, describing him as a singular talent whose storytelling abilities remain unmatched in the industry.
