The New York City Department of Sanitation is moving to impose stiffer financial penalties on those who improperly dispose of needles, prompted by a surge in workplace injuries among its personnel. The initiative comes as the agency confronts a growing occupational hazard affecting its workforce throughout the five boroughs.
Through this year, 49 sanitation employees have sustained needle-stick injuries while handling refuse, the department reported. Each incident poses significant health risks to workers and underscores the public safety implications of careless medical waste disposal practices across the city.
By elevating fines for improper needle disposal, the sanitation department aims to deter the behavior and protect its staff from preventable harm. The measure reflects broader city efforts to hold residents and businesses accountable for safe waste management practices.
