Law enforcement officials in Arizona are actively pursuing multiple suspects following a predawn shooting that claimed the life of a 23-year-old Tucson police recruit and left his fiancée, a 23-year-old Pima County corrections officer, hospitalized with gunshot injuries. Authorities have identified the deceased as Carlos Ramirez, a TPD recruit, while his partner was transported to a medical facility in stable condition, according to statements from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
The incident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. at a residence located in the 7700 block of South Enchanted Spring Drive, approximately 17 miles southwest of Tucson. Deputies who responded to the initial call discovered Ramirez deceased at the scene and immediately transported his fiancée for emergency medical treatment. Sheriff Chris Nanos noted that the couple share a child together.
Investigators are searching for multiple suspects described as Hispanic males dressed entirely in black clothing and ski masks who were believed to be traveling in a gray Acura MDX. Authorities indicated that the vehicle’s gas cap may be missing. Law enforcement officials stated they anticipate additional video evidence as they continue reviewing thousands of surveillance clips from the area.
Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto characterized the shooting as both “a tragic event and tremendous loss” for the community, department, and city. Sheriff Nanos stated he expected to receive updated briefings from detectives as the investigation progresses. Authorities have requested that anyone with information contact 911 immediately.
Officials emphasized that the shooting appears unrelated to the abduction of Nancy Guthrie, which occurred on the opposite side of Tucson in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood on February 1. The investigation remains ongoing.
