A helicopter carrying seven passengers crashed in a remote mountainous area of northern Kenya on Wednesday morning, resulting in the deaths of five Americans, according to the U.S. State Department. The incident took place around 9 a.m. local time near Kirish in Samburu County, as confirmed by Kenya’s Civil Aviation Authority.
Among those killed was José Suárez, a prominent Telemundo executive who held the position of president and general manager overseeing multiple television stations throughout Florida. NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde announced Suárez’s death in a communication to staff members.
Lady Lori Helicopters, the operator of the aircraft, identified the aircraft as a Eurocopter EC130 B4 registered as 5Y-GYM. The company said the charter flight was traveling from Suyian Conservancy, a 44,000-acre private wildlife preserve, to Ololokwe when it went down in the vicinity of Mount Ololokwe.
Lady Lori Helicopters released a statement expressing profound sorrow over the tragedy and offering condolences to the passengers, crew members, and their families. “Our deepest sympathies are with the guests, crew, their families and loved ones, and all those affected by this tragic accident,” the operator said on social media.
Investigators have not yet established the cause of the crash, with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant authorities undertaking formal inquiries. The U.S. Embassy in Kenya is coordinating with local officials and providing consular support to affected families.
The State Department released a statement emphasizing the administration’s commitment to American safety abroad. “The Trump Administration has no higher priority than the safety and security of Americans,” the department said in its condolence message.
