Céline Dion disclosed in a recent Harper’s Bazaar Global Icons cover story that she had concealed symptoms of stiff-person syndrome for approximately 17 years before receiving her official diagnosis in August 2022. The 58-year-old Grammy-winning vocalist spoke candidly about the rare neurological disorder, which causes severe muscle stiffness and unpredictable, painful spasms that significantly impacted her daily life.
During the years preceding her diagnosis, Dion’s condition became so severe that she struggled with basic mobility and required substantial doses of Valium to function. She privately attributed her canceled performances to minor ailments such as sinus infections or coughs, battling guilt over the deception while managing increasingly debilitating symptoms that worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dion publicly announced her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis in December 2022 through an emotional Instagram video, explaining how the spasms affected her ability to walk and sing. In May 2023, she cancelled the remainder of her Courage World Tour, eliminating all remaining dates for 2023 and 2024.
Her recovery strategy has proved comprehensive, incorporating medication, physical therapy, vocal rehabilitation, and immunotherapy. Dion has steadily re-entered the public sphere, presenting at the 68th Grammy Awards in February 2024 and performing at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony in July, where she sang Édith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” from the Eiffel Tower.
The singer announced plans for a five-week Paris residency beginning September 2025, describing the opportunity as her best birthday gift. Her current training regimen includes 90-minute Pilates sessions three times weekly and ballet classes, as she focuses on reconnecting with her devoted fanbase after years away from performing.
