The All Elite Wrestling star achieved a longtime goal when AEW held Grand Slam Mexico at Arena México on August 5, marking one of the premier venues on his bucket list alongside Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and Tokyo Dome in Japan. Copeland competed in an eight-man tag team match alongside Christian Cage and the Jackson brothers, Matt and Nick, in the evening’s opening contest. The moment proved electrifying from the opening bell as the arena erupted when Alter Bridge’s “Metalingus” reverberated through the facility.
AEW commentator Tony Schiavone told listeners of his “What Happened When” podcast that the crowd’s reaction stood as the most intense he had witnessed throughout his broadcasting career. In remarks to Fox News Digital, Copeland acknowledged the ovation matched only his surprise Royal Rumble comeback in 2020 during his tenure with WWE. The wrestler described an almost out-of-body experience, saying the moment transported him beyond the present as he absorbed the magnitude of fan appreciation surrounding his return to in-ring competition.
Copeland credited the enthusiastic Mexican fanbase’s understanding that his appearances represent a limited window, noting their recognition that he had been absent from their region for 18 years. He expressed profound gratitude for the collective decision by fans to celebrate the moment, acknowledging the reciprocal nature of the exchange between performer and audience. The electric energy proved so intense that Copeland struggled to decompress afterward, requiring calming activities like watching television to manage the physiological aftermath of the adrenaline surge.
The wrestler and Cage are scheduled to defend their AEW World Tag Team Championship against The Young Bucks at All In, the organization’s marquee annual event. Away from the ring, Copeland and Cage co-founded Pure Plank nearly two years ago, a fitness initiative designed to help individuals achieve healthier lifestyles through accessible starting points and incremental progression.
