Oliver Gilbert, a Miami-Dade County Commissioner, has emerged victorious from a competitive Democratic primary field to become the likely successor to retiring U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson in Florida’s 24th Congressional District. The South Florida seat, which includes portions of Miami, maintains strong Democratic leanings despite redistricting efforts by state Republicans earlier this year, positioning Gilbert as the probable next congressman from the region.
Wilson, who has served in Congress since 2011, announced her decision to step down at year’s end. Her tenure began representing Florida’s 17th District for one term before redistricting prompted her move to the 24th District. The congresswoman has gained national recognition for her distinctive personal style, particularly her collection of vibrant, oversized wide-brimmed hats worn regularly throughout the Capitol and her district.
Seven Democratic candidates competed in the primary race following Wilson’s announcement. The retiring representative provided a forceful endorsement of Gilbert during a campaign rally, telling supporters that his backing should catalyze broader district support. National Democratic leadership has remained neutral throughout the contest but is expected to unite behind Gilbert moving forward.
The primary notably diverged from contentious 2026 midterm battles unfolding elsewhere, where far-left challengers aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America have mounted aggressive campaigns against establishment Democrats. In separate Florida contests, socialist-backed candidates challenged Reps. Jared Moskowitz and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, with Wasserman Schultz prevailing in her Tuesday night race.
