The San Diego Padres defeated the New York Mets 5-2 on Tuesday night behind a standout performance from Fernando Tatis Jr., who delivered both at the plate and in the field at Citi Field. Tatis launched a 452-foot leadoff home run on the first pitch from Zac Thornton into the second deck in left field, marking his team-record 18th career homer to start a game. He subsequently added a two-run shot off Thornton in the fifth inning to extend the Padres’ advantage.
Tatis’ most memorable moment came defensively in the second inning when he leaped over the right-field wall to rob Francisco Lindor of a grand slam. The catch left momentary uncertainty on the field, with Tatis standing motionless upon landing before raising his glove to confirm the out while pitcher Robbie Ray celebrated nearby. The spectacular grab followed a night in which Mets outfielders Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing combined to throw out three Padres runners at home plate.
Manny Machado contributed a solo homer in the ninth, his 24th of the season, while Ty France drove in a run with a single in the seventh. Ray (11-7) earned his first victory since arriving from the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline, surrendering three hits and one homer while striking out four across six innings. Mason Miller recorded his 31st save with two strikeouts in the ninth.
Thornton (3-4) allowed three runs and tied a career high with seven strikeouts over five innings for the Mets. Luis Robert Jr. and Luis Torrens each homered for New York. The Padres improved to 18-6 since July 24, leading all major league teams, while the Mets sit 10-4 in the same span. Michael King (8-8, 3.41 ERA) takes the mound for San Diego on Wednesday against Mets right-hander Robert Stock (0-2, 6.57 ERA).
