A homeless 39-year-old suspect was taken into custody after authorities say he ignited a wicker basket positioned atop a sign at the entrance of Arch Creek Bible Chapel in North Miami Beach. Surveillance footage captured the incident on August 10 at the church located at 13740 NE 20 Place, according to police records. The suspect, Joseph Drew, acknowledged to detectives that he appeared on the video but attributed his actions to intoxication and stimulant abuse.

Drew claimed he had “blacked out” due to being heavily intoxicated and addicted to Adderall, a prescription stimulant, when questioned by investigators. Officers apprehended him shortly before 3:20 p.m. on Saturday at a Valero gas station situated at 1900 NE 163 Street in North Miami Beach. The Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center received Drew into custody after 9:30 p.m. that same evening, jail records indicate.

The fire resulted in no injuries, authorities confirmed. Drew now faces multiple charges across two separate cases in Miami-Dade County. The August 10 incident resulted in charges of second-degree arson and burglary of an occupied structure, while the Saturday arrest generated counts of controlled substance possession and drug paraphernalia possession.
