President Donald Trump hosted a Monday afternoon meeting at the White House with Ryder Williams, a 16-year-old lifeguard from California, and Nathaniel Rai, the 10-year-old boy Williams rescued from the ocean in an incident that garnered widespread attention online. Both families attended the Oval Office gathering, where Trump commended Williams for his heroic actions during the July 25 rescue.

Williams, employed by California State Parks, was stationed at the beach when Rai was swept into the water by a wave. Moving quickly, Williams entered the rough surf to reach the struggling child, with a second lifeguard assisting in bringing both individuals safely to shore. Video footage of the rescue circulated across social media platforms and ultimately reached Eric Trump, prompting the presidential invitation.

Trump emphasized Williams’ valor and character during their meeting, telling the teenager, “What you did was incredible and everybody saw it.” The president suggested that Williams’ courageous response should inspire young people across the nation and highlighted the often-underrecognized role lifeguards play in public safety.

Williams, who aspires to pursue a career in firefighting, attributed his calm response to extensive professional training. “In those dangerous moments that we have, we always try to fall back on our training,” he told reporters present at the White House. He encouraged others to remain vigilant and assist those around them in times of need.

Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai, expressed profound gratitude for Williams’ intervention, describing himself as “beyond grateful” for his son’s rescue. Trump used the occasion to advocate for greater recognition of lifeguards’ critical contributions to community safety.
