President Donald Trump instructed the Pentagon on Sunday to substantially reduce upcoming joint military exercises with South Korea, citing financial concerns and diplomatic messaging. The Republican president claimed the 11-day training operation, set to commence this week with 18,000 South Korean troops, would transmit an unwelcome signal to North Korea while negotiations remain a priority.
Trump stated the exercises are prohibitively expensive and carry messaging he deemed “totally inappropriate and hostile” given North Korea’s recent conduct. He credited North Korea with being “unthreatening and respectful” during his current tenure and instructed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to implement substantial cuts to the Joint Military Exercises.
The drills were designed to enhance operational readiness and test complex defensive scenarios against potential North Korean aggression. Planned activities included live-fire exercises for precision targeting coordination, river crossing operations, and repositioning of prepositioned military assets, according to U.S. military officials.
Trump’s action mirrors decisions made during his first term, when he characterized similar exercises as “provocative” and announced plans to suspend them following his 2018 Singapore summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The president has met with the North Korean leader three times previously to address nuclear program concerns, with his most recent encounter occurring in 2019.
North Korea’s Foreign Ministry has previously denounced U.S.-South Korean training operations as preparation for military aggression that destabilizes the region. Trump posted an image with Kim Jong Un on social media, describing their relationship as strong despite purported tensions.
