Rescue and recovery efforts are advancing across Colombia more than six days after a major earthquake devastated the nation. Official reports indicate the disaster has claimed at least 290 lives, with approximately 140 individuals unaccounted for and roughly 4,000 others injured across affected regions.
A humanitarian mission is launching from South Florida on Sunday with critical aid for earthquake survivors. Pilot Juan Rojas will lead the operation, marking his second aid mission to Colombia, transporting approximately 2,000 pounds of medical equipment and supplies to the hardest-hit areas.
Rojas outlined the flight’s strategy to address needs across multiple regions. “We’re aiming to go to three cities,” he explained, noting that Pereira, located near the epicenter of destruction, will receive priority support as one of the most severely impacted communities before the team relocates resources to Quibo the following day with seven medical professionals.
Help Land Foundation Founder Ender Urdaneta emphasized the comprehensive approach to relief work. The initiative will focus assistance on vulnerable children in heavily damaged zones while using the aircraft to coordinate rescue personnel movement between affected cities, maximizing the efficiency of humanitarian response efforts.
