Virginia State University in Ettrick activated a campus lockdown early Saturday following a shooting near the Quad Annexes that left five people injured. Law enforcement officers from both the university’s police department and Chesterfield County Police responded to the scene and discovered the gunshot victims outside student dormitories.
All five victims were transported to medical facilities for treatment. One person initially assessed as having life-threatening injuries was later upgraded to critical condition, while the remaining four sustained wounds classified as non-life-threatening, according to county police officials.
University administrators confirmed that multiple suspects were involved in the incident and urged the campus community to stay clear of the affected area pending the ongoing investigation. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office provided assistance to local authorities leading the probe.
Virginia State, a historically Black institution with approximately 5,700 students located 24 miles south of Richmond, had just opened residence halls one week prior to the shooting. Classes are scheduled to begin Monday, with many incoming students having recently completed orientation programming.
