Eman Abdelhadi, a University of Chicago professor and half-sister of Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, posted a commemorative video on October 7, 2024, marking one year since Hamas launched attacks that killed approximately 1,200 people. The video, which Abdelhadi described as an offering to commemorate lives lost between October 7, 2023 and October 7, 2024, was shared collaboratively through the Rabbis4Ceasefire Instagram account and her own.
In the video, Abdelhadi opened by saying “Allahu Akbar,” explaining the phrase means “God is greater” and holds significance in Muslim tradition. She discussed the phrase as a reminder that despite brutality and oppression, justice remains achievable, but made no mention of victims killed in the Hamas attacks during her remarks.
El-Sayed’s campaign responded to the resurfaced video by stating the candidate disagrees with his half-sister on several political positions and her chosen rhetoric, particularly regarding foreign policy. A campaign spokeswoman told Fox News Digital that El-Sayed’s record and platform, rather than his family members’ views, should guide voters in Michigan.
Abdelhadi has faced legal troubles stemming from activism-related incidents, including an October 2025 arrest following alleged confrontations with an Illinois state trooper at protests outside a suburban Chicago ICE detention facility. She was charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery to a government employee and two misdemeanor counts of resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
El-Sayed himself has drawn criticism over statements regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, including a fundraising email on the October 7 anniversary that criticized Israeli military operations while omitting reference to Hamas’s initial killings. The candidate has also faced scrutiny for campaign appearances alongside streamer Hasan Piker, whose previous remarks suggesting America “deserved 9/11” have drawn condemnation.
