Stockard Channing has found contentment in her deliberate withdrawal from the spotlight, relocating to London shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic upended the world. The decision came in the wake of losing her long-term partner, producer Daniel Gilham, who died in 2014 after 25 years together. Writing for The Sunday Times, the 82-year-old revealed that solitude suits her well at this stage of her life.

Channing attributed her move from Maine partly to processing grief, noting that Gilham’s death carried unexpected emotional weight that manifested gradually. The actress indicated her relocation also coincided with broader concerns about the political and cultural climate in America, contrasting contemporary governance with the fictional world of “The West Wing,” where she portrayed First Lady Abbey Bartlet beginning in 1999.

During her tenure on the political drama, Channing worked alongside creator Aaron Sorkin, who deliberately crafted the character to reflect her own personality. She recounted their first meeting bluntly, telling the acclaimed writer she had no use for compliments rather than engaging in polite conversation, a moment she later realized may have seemed unnecessarily curt.

The actress detailed her current daily rhythm, marked by modest routines and minimal pretense. Her mornings begin when her dog demands attention, followed by coffee and journaling with fountain pen in hand, activities she pursues from bed whenever possible. Physical exercise ranks lower on her priority list, though she acknowledges its importance.

Channing acknowledged her wardrobe consists primarily of pieces from decades past and rejected any notion of performing celebrity persona.
