British actor Hugh Laurie, renowned for his leading role in the medical drama “House,” has weighed in on the contentious debate surrounding transgender athletes in women’s sports. In a series of social media exchanges this week, the three-time Golden Globe recipient declared his opposition to allowing men to compete in women’s athletics.
The comments emerged after writer and transgender rights advocate Graham Linehan challenged Laurie on the platform X, prompting the actor to respond with unequivocal language. Linehan subsequently pressed Laurie to voice backing for WNBA player Sophie Cunningham, who has similarly stated her belief that biological men should not participate in women’s sports competitions.
Cunningham detailed her position in an ESPN article published July 21, asserting that protecting female athletes from competing against biological men is essential. She emphasized that her stance does not equate to hostility toward transgender individuals, describing herself as advocating for both compassion and honesty in the discussion.
The positions held by both Laurie and Cunningham align with broader American sentiment. A New York Times survey conducted in March 2025 found that 79 percent of Americans support barring men from women’s sports competitions.
