Carson Peters-Berger, now 18, has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide and sexual assault in the death of his 10-year-old cousin Lily Peters more than four years ago. A resolution hearing scheduled for Aug. 26 may prevent the case from proceeding to trial, potentially concluding the matter without a jury verdict, according to reporting by WEAU.
Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell confirmed that the resolution hearing means the case will not go to trial and will be resolved at the August hearing. However, Peters-Berger’s attorney, Michael Cohen, suggested the proceeding will examine specific issues that could still determine whether a trial occurs, leaving the outcome uncertain.
Lily was reported missing on the evening of April 24, 2022, after failing to return from her aunt’s house. Her father discovered her bicycle in a wooded area in Chippewa Falls, but police initially could not locate her; her body was found the next morning near where the bicycle had been abandoned.
Investigators determined Lily’s injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma. Peters-Berger, who was 14 at the time of her death, allegedly told police he struck Lily with a stick, punched her in the stomach, strangled her, and attempted sexual assault after she died.
After returning home and showering, Peters-Berger allegedly moved Lily’s body to hide it better, dragging it several feet and covering it with leaves. If convicted of first-degree intentional homicide, he faces a life sentence.
