A boat overturned near Liberty Island in New York Harbor on Saturday evening, resulting in two fatalities including an infant, the NYPD confirmed. Officers responded to reports of the capsized vessel at approximately 10:25 p.m., initiating a rescue operation that ultimately saved a dozen people from the water.
Divers from the NYPD recovered an adult female and an infant from the water following the initial rescue efforts. Both victims were transported to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn but were pronounced dead shortly after arrival despite being in critical condition at the time of transport.
The identities of the deceased remain undisclosed. Several other passengers aboard the vessel were also hospitalized and are reported to be in stable condition, according to police statements.
The 22-foot bowrider’s capsizing is still under active investigation, with authorities noting that no arrests have been made. The NYPD’s Harbor Unit, Scuba Team and Aviation Unit coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard to manage the emergency response.
