Trump Administration Escalates Cuba Pressure With New Military Sanctions and CIA Spy Task Force

The Trump administration is intensifying its approach toward Cuba by announcing expanded sanctions against the country’s military apparatus while simultaneously deploying intelligence operatives to the island. The dual strategy reflects a hardened stance on the communist nation as the U.S. government seeks to maximize pressure on Havana’s leadership.

Five additional organizations and eight individuals involved in weapons importation, production, and repair operations now face sanctions under the new measures. The designations mark an escalation in economic penalties targeting military-related activities and infrastructure supporting Cuba’s armed forces.

Simultaneously, the CIA has unveiled a specialized task force composed of analysts and covert influence specialists tasked with identifying fractures within Cuba’s ruling elite. According to Cuba analyst Andy Gomez, the initiative represents a broader Washington strategy aimed at destabilizing the Cuban government during a period when regime officials show no indication of substantive political reform.

A State Department report released last month documented decades of Cuban espionage operations conducted in partnership with Russia and China against American interests. The document detailed cases including spy Manuel Rocha, Juan Pablo Rique, and members of the Wasp Network, whose intelligence operations contributed to the downing of two Brothers to the Rescue aircraft in the 1990s.

Intelligence operations between the two countries have persisted for decades, though activity declined over the past ten years following medical incidents personnel attributed to “Havana Syndrome.”
