A Marine veteran serving as a Las Vegas police officer died Tuesday after being shot while responding to a report of an armed individual, authorities confirmed. The suspect in the incident was also fatally shot during the encounter.
Officers and police drones responded shortly before 4 p.m. to a business located at the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue following a dispatch call reporting a person brandishing a firearm who appeared to be intoxicated, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated. Police located the armed suspect near Mountain Vista Street and the Interstate 11 underpass.
The suspect opened fire on responding officers, who returned fire in response. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 30-year-old officer sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange.
The wounded officer was transported to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead despite resuscitation efforts by Clark County Fire Department personnel, other officers, and emergency medical services, Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill said during a briefing.
The fallen officer had been a Marine and had served with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department since November 2023. Sheriff McMahill characterized him as someone who had served both his country and community.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department extended condolences to the officer’s family and committed to providing support during the coming days. Nevada State Police also issued a statement mourning the loss and expressing solidarity with their Las Vegas counterparts.
