A study published in Neurology suggests that restricted sugar consumption during pregnancy and infancy may substantially reduce dementia risk in later life. Researchers tracking more than 64,000 British adults found that individuals exposed to lower sugar levels before birth and during their first two years demonstrated up to 23% lower dementia risk compared with those born after sugar rationing ended in 1953.
The investigation revealed specific risk reductions based on the duration of early sugar restriction. Those with limited sugar intake through their first year showed a 21% lower dementia risk, while the reduction climbed to 23% for those whose restricted intake extended through age two. Additionally, people with minimal early-life sugar exposure developed dementia an average of 2.6 years later than counterparts with higher consumption levels.
Jiazhen Zheng of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, lead author of the research, stated that the findings indicate lasting neurological benefits from early dietary interventions. However, the study establishes only an association rather than causation between sugar intake and dementia prevention.
Dariush Mozaffarian, director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University, cautioned against drawing definitive conclusions from the work. He noted that wartime and postwar populations differed substantially in overall nutrition and calorie consumption, making it difficult to isolate sugar as the sole determining factor.
Researchers acknowledged multiple limitations affecting their analysis, including reliance on historical rationing policy as a proxy for individual consumption patterns. The study could not eliminate confounding variables between groups, preventing establishment of direct cause-and-effect relationships between early sugar restriction and reduced dementia risk.
Despite these constraints, Mozaffarian reinforced existing medical guidance for pregnant women to prioritize nutrient-dense, minimally processed foods. He recommended emphasizing fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, fermented dairy and fish while limiting ultra-processed items high in sugar, starch and sodium.
