A new analysis from World Population Review has catalogued the animals posing the greatest mortal threat to residents in each state across the nation. The 2026 report reveals a diverse roster of deadly creatures, encompassing everything from large predators and venomous reptiles to unexpected hazards like jellyfish and household pets.
Snakes represent the single deadliest animal category nationwide, accounting for fatalities in 14 states. Rattlesnake species dominate this list, with pygmy rattlesnakes threatening Georgia and Oklahoma residents, timber rattlesnakes posing dangers in Connecticut and Kansas, and western diamondbacks claiming lives in Arizona.
Other venomous snake species round out regional threats: Southern Pacific rattlesnakes in California, prairie rattlesnakes in North Dakota, Mojave rattlesnakes in Nevada, and eastern massasaugas in Michigan. Non-rattlesnake species including eastern diamondbacks in Louisiana, cottonmouths in Mississippi, eastern copperheads in Indiana, and southern copperheads in South Carolina also rank among leading killers.
Bears represent the second-most lethal animal category, accounting for eight states. Black bears top the list in Tennessee, Wisconsin, Oregon, Kentucky and Massachusetts, while grizzly bears dominate in Idaho, Montana and Washington.
Large ungulates including whitetail deer and moose account for 10 states combined. Deer lead fatality counts in Arkansas, Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, while moose threaten residents in Colorado, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Bison pose the greatest danger in South Dakota and Wyoming, and mountain lions rank deadliest in New Mexico.
Marine hazards account for five states, with tiger sharks in Rhode Island, bull sharks in Maryland and Virginia, and Portuguese man o’ wars in Delaware and North Carolina. While the jellyfish-like creature’s sting rarely proves fatal, it commonly causes painful welts and skin irritation.
Alligators rank as the deadliest animal in both Florida and Texas, with the American alligator specifically topping Florida’s list. Canines including dogs and coyotes account for five states, with dogs listed as Alaska’s greatest concern and coyotes dominating in Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey and Utah.
Stinging and biting arthropods round out the deadly threats, accounting for five states. Wasps lead in Iowa, ticks in Missouri, mosquitoes in New York, and black widow spiders in Alabama and Nebraska. Hawaii faces unique dangers from yellow-bellied sea snakes.
