Alex Ovechkin, the NHL’s all-time leading goal-scorer, made an unexpected appearance in a wedding couple’s photo session while strolling through a Saint Petersburg hotel staircase during his Russian offseason. The Washington Capitals forward had traveled to his native country to participate in the Match of the Year, a charity hockey game featuring prominent NHL and KHL players. The impromptu photobomb became an instant highlight when Ovechkin wandered into frame, hockey stick in hand.
Video of the encounter shows the moment Ovechkin’s stick blade enters the background before the star athlete fully appears in the shot, creating a memorable surprise for the newlyweds. The couple’s photographer captured the playful interaction, turning what could have been a routine wedding photo into a one-of-a-kind keepsake featuring an international hockey legend. The incident demonstrated Ovechkin’s casual approach to carrying his equipment, as he appeared to be traveling through the hotel corridor with his CCM stick.
Ovechkin is scheduled to return to the United States within the next month for the Capitals’ training camp after signing a one-year contract with Washington earlier this month. The team finished last season outside the playoff picture but added several offseason acquisitions, including forwards Alex Tuch from the Buffalo Sabres, Jordan Kyrou from the St. Louis Blues, and captain Boone Jenner from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
