A Virginia court has ordered a mental health competency evaluation for Elijah Bieniemy, 27, before he proceeds through the judicial system on charges stemming from a shooting incident. The son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy remains held without bond at Loudon County Adult Detention Center following his arrest Monday for the incident that occurred at his family’s Ashburn residence on Sunday.
Elijah Bieniemy faces three criminal charges: malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office. His mother, Mia Bieniemy, sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the attack. A public defender’s court filing indicated the defendant “appears to suffer from significant mental health issues” and currently lacks the ability to participate in his own defense.
His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for September 9, occurring just before the Chiefs open their 2026 NFL season against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football. Chief Andy Reid provided an update on Mia’s condition during a Wednesday media availability at training camp, noting she has been released from intensive care and is recovering well.
Eric Bieniemy, 56, returned to Kansas City as offensive coordinator this offseason after previous stints with the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, and UCLA. During his prior tenure with the Chiefs from 2018 to 2022, his offensive unit ranked among the league’s most prolific, contributing to two Super Bowl championships.
