Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident during the offseason, the team disclosed Saturday. The collision left Shanahan with a fractured nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, a severe concussion, and facial lacerations requiring more than 40 stitches, according to ESPN reporting.
The 49ers organization confirmed that Shanahan’s injuries are not considered life-threatening. The team stated that Shanahan will maintain a reduced role during the opening phase of training camp as he undergoes recovery from his injuries, while thanking emergency responders for their assistance at the scene.
Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster, along with the team’s offensive and defensive coordinators, will assume Shanahan’s head coaching responsibilities during his recuperation period. The arrangement will remain in place until Shanahan is cleared to resume full duties with the organization.
