Joanna Ruth Shields, 37, died from complications stemming from alcohol withdrawal related to chronic alcohol use disorder, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office announced following a forensic investigation. The agency classified her death as natural after ruling out criminal involvement in the case.
Shields’ body was discovered April 9 near Sykes Hot Springs along the Pine Ridge Trail within Los Padres National Forest. Initial suspicions of foul play arose when hikers who found her reported observing a head wound and marks on her neck, prompting investigators to pursue the matter as potentially criminal.
The autopsy revealed that a laceration above her left eye was superficial and played no role in her death. Investigators determined that neck markings resulted from postmortem insect activity rather than strangulation, and no forensic evidence supported homicide allegations.
According to the coroner’s report, Shields had previously struggled with bipolar disorder and alcohol use disorder. Her sister informed investigators that Shields had experienced alcohol withdrawal seizures before achieving sobriety and that her mental condition deteriorated after discontinuing psychiatric medications months before her death.
Monterey County Sheriff-Coroner Tina Nieto expressed hope that the findings would bring closure to Shields’ family members following the lengthy investigation.
