Miami Gardens Hosts Second Annual Free Back-to-School Physical Event for Students

Miami Gardens residents gathered Saturday at Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex for the second annual Back-to-School Physical Event, a free community initiative designed to prepare students for the upcoming academic year. The event, hosted by Miami Gardens Councilwoman Michelle Powell, offered comprehensive health services including required school enrollment physicals, athletic examinations, and access to educational supplies.

Recognizing that physical wellness directly impacts academic success, Powell emphasized the importance of ensuring students enter the classroom in optimal health. The physician-councilwoman stressed that while school supplies are valuable resources, prioritizing student health creates a foundation for classroom readiness and overall achievement.

This year’s expanded event introduced new health offerings, including EKG screenings tailored for student athletes and vision examinations for children without recent eye care evaluations. Students planning to participate in athletics completed physicals required for athletic competition eligibility.

A coalition of community organizations contributed to the event’s success, with the Black Nurses Association, Lions Club, Cultural Collective and local businesses providing medical services and resources. Attendees accessed a “shopping mall” setup where children could select backpacks, pencils and other essential school supplies, helping families offset the financial burden of back-to-school preparation.
