San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sustained non-life-threatening injuries in an automobile accident that occurred earlier this month, limiting his availability as the team commenced its training camp Saturday. The coaching staff announced the incident following the opening of the 49ers’ offseason program, with the team set to begin on-field activities Sunday.
Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will oversee operations during Shanahan’s recovery, supported by coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer. The organization expressed gratitude to emergency responders who attended to the accident scene.
Shanahan enters his 10th year leading the franchise and ranks among the league’s most respected offensive strategists. During his tenure, the 49ers have advanced to two Super Bowls following the 2019 and 2023 seasons, plus two additional NFC Championship Game appearances in 2021 and 2022.
The coach holds a 91-72 record across regular season and playoff contests with San Francisco, positioning him third on the franchise’s all-time wins list behind George Seifert with 108 victories and Bill Walsh with 102. Last season, Shanahan guided the 49ers to a 12-5 regular-season record and a playoff victory while finishing fifth in AP NFL Coach of the Year voting.
