The New York Knicks captured this year’s title, following championship victories by Oklahoma City in 2025, Boston in 2024, Denver in 2023, Golden State in 2022, Milwaukee in 2021, the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, and Toronto in 2019. Sportsbooks and prediction markets now suggest this unprecedented streak could persist.
LeBron James’ signing with the Philadelphia 76ers has significantly altered the championship landscape, propelling the franchise into serious contention but not to the top tier. According to most major oddsbooks and betting markets as of Saturday, the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs remain the heaviest favorites to capture next season’s Larry O’Brien Trophy. The Thunder, led by two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, hold a slim edge over the Spurs, whose roster centers on Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama.
The 76ers now occupy the third or fourth position in championship odds depending on the book, alongside defending champion New York. Denver, Toronto, Minnesota, Detroit, and Cleveland comprise the next cluster of contenders with sixth through eleventh-best odds. The Raptors stand out as the tier’s rising prospect, buoyed by expectations that Toronto will eventually acquire Kawhi Leonard. Miami rounds out the group, with betting markets anticipating that the Giannis Antetokounmpo acquisition will return the Heat to playoff contention.
The Lakers, despite losing James, remain positioned as playoff-bound alongside Luka Doncic. Indiana, a 2025 Finals participant, tops the next tier despite plummeting to the league’s bottom after Tyrese Haliburton’s injury absence. Houston and Golden State occupy the top 15 in current odds, with Atlanta, Orlando, and Portland not far behind.
Play-in berth contenders include Washington, now featuring Trae Young, Anthony Davis, and Khris Middleton alongside No. 1 draft pick AJ Dybantsa. Phoenix, Charlotte, Dallas, and Utah join the Wizards in this tier. The longest odds favor the Clippers, New Orleans, Chicago, Memphis, Milwaukee, Brooklyn, and Sacramento, though history suggests surprises remain possible.
