The impending Atlantic tropical storm destined to receive the name Dolly represents no connection whatsoever to the Tuesday death of musician Dolly Parton, forecasters clarified. Storm naming follows predetermined protocols established by the World Meteorological Organization, with name lists recycled on a six-year cycle featuring alphabetically ordered designations that alternate between male and female identities.
The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season commenced with Tropical Storm Arthur making landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast in June, followed by Tropical Storm Bertha bringing significant rainfall to Louisiana and Texas during July. Tropical Storm Cristobal emerged and rapidly dissipated over Atlantic waters in early August, preceding the anticipated formation of the next named system.
Meteorologists at the Miami-based National Hurricane Center are tracking a disturbance south of the Cabo Verde Islands that could develop into a tropical depression within the coming week. Should the system intensify to sustained winds of at least 39 mph, it would officially become Tropical Storm Dolly.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has projected a below-average Atlantic hurricane season, forecasting between eight and 14 named storms, with three to six reaching hurricane intensity and one to three becoming major hurricanes. The agency attributes the subdued outlook to El Niño conditions.
Storm naming procedures enable efficient communication of weather warnings and prevent public confusion during emergency situations. The WMO selects names based on brevity, pronunciation ease, and regional familiarity, retiring designations deemed sensitive following particularly destructive storms. Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 system that devastated Caribbean territories, was retired from the 2025 name roster.
